Telephone: +61 3224 5487; Facsimile: +61 3224 5498
Web: www.publicworks.qld.gov.au

In one of it's main roles, the Queensland Department of Public Works leads the Queensland Government's building-asset management program - designing, building, fitting out and maintaining public buildings and major facilities, including hospitals, schools, police stations, court houses and government office accommodation.

The Department is the central provider of owned and leased office accommodation and employee housing for all Queensland Government agencies.

The Department develops and administers a suite of whole-of-government polices on the management of building capital works, the management of maintenance of government buildings, supplier prequalfication, the management of office accommodation and the performance of government building assets.

As part of its broader portfolio of responsibilities, the Department plays a vital supporting role across the Queensland Government and its agencies in delivering their services throughout the State. These roles include whole-of-Government information and communication technology (ICT), procurement, a regulatory framework for the racing industry, record keeping for the public sector, and other services such as the provision of government vehicles, business supplies, printing needs and requirements. This role extends to the Department's relationship with the private sector in the construction, ICT and other fields with which the Department is associated.

In the construction industry, the Queensland Government, through the Department of Public Works, continues to play a key role in training apprentices and, in fact, is the only government in this country that has close to 350 apprentices on its books. In all its roles, the Department works closely with industry to deliver services, infrastructure and development for Queensland.

Climate change is an issue of major significance for all of us. Most of the world's leading scientists agree that climate change is occurring due in large part to human activity. This presents challenges for the way we live and work and will require action from industry, governments at all levels, the broader community, and individuals.

The AGO encourages all Australians to better understand climate change and to work together to help combat it. For more information about the Australian Greenhouse Office and the programmes it runs, please visit www.greenhouse.gov.au.

Main Roads is responsible for managing Queensland's largest infrastructure asset - the 34,000km long Queensland state-controlled road network worth almost $30 billion dollars. To achieve the vision of "Connecting Queensland", Main Roads plays a key role in the management, planning and provision of road transport infrastructure for Queensland. The road network links communities, facilities business and industry, and in partnership with other transport infrastructure providers, connects people and places within the context of the Queensland government's social, economic and environmental objectives.

Queensland is Australia's fastest growing state with our population recently hitting the 4 million mark. Roads are currently the predominant mode for all interstate freight movements and the majority of urban passenger and freight movements. While the average national growth rate for freight over the last decade was 2.8%, in Queensland it was 8% per annum. Roads carry most of the non-bulk freight tonnage, and this role is likely to continue even with a significant shift of freight to rail.
